KALAMAZOO, MI - For more than three years, Maru Sushi & Grill has been serving up high quality authentic Japanese cuisine in downtown Kalamazoo.
The restaurant is located in the 1920s-era train depot at 427 E. Michigan Ave. Maru was one of a few businesses new to the area that added to the entertainment district when the historic Depot Building was redeveloped.
Robert Song, the founder and owner of Maru Sushi & Grill, said the site had been an eyesore but the developers had a vision for bringing it back to life. He said he thinks the restaurant, which opened in March 2017, contributed to bringing new vitality and economic activity downtown.
“We’re a company that helps to bring positive change to a market,’' said Song, who said they have five other locations in Grand Rapids, East Lansing, Detroit, Okemos and Midland. “We want to give the market what it’s been missing.’'
Song doesn’t sugarcoat the financial impact the ongoing coronavirus pandemic has had on the Kalamazoo eatery and the other five locations. He credits Maru’s survival to a number of highly dedicated and hard-working staff, a loyal customer base, and the ability to consistently deliver excellent food and an overall great customer experience.
The atmosphere is described as “very inviting and comfortable.’' He and his wife designed the downtown spot understanding that a restaurant’s atmosphere can enhance the entire experience of a meal, Song said.
But Michigan’s three-week indoor dining ban for restaurants and bars took effect Nov. 18, so the restaurant is currently only offering takeout and delivery services. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services put the dining and other restrictions in place to slow the spread of COVID-19.
Song said he was not surprised by the move and anticipates it could be extended beyond the Dec. 8 deadline.
“I knew something was coming with the spike in numbers (coronavirus cases),’' said Song, who noted he hopes he doesn’t have to lay off or furlough workers. “We take safety seriously. We are happy to still be be serving our customers seven days a week.’'
Song said the full menu is still available such as customer favorites like the firecracker shrimp and crouching tiger, one of their signature sushi rolls. See the menu that includes nigiri and sashimi, spicy edamame and gyoza here.
Maru Sushi & Grill’s hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday. Order online or call 269-488-4888.
