Traditional Irish performers will be virtual on Nov 11th - My Little Falls

by Mike Cecconi

The Little Falls Public Library is pleased to announce an upcoming virtual concert by Utica-area traditional Irish musical performers Craobh Dugan, November 11th at 7 PM via the Zoom web application. Though current health regulations limit the library’s ability to host larger gatherings in-person, the library looks forward to still being able to share Craobh Dugan’s unique brand of entertainment and cultural enrichment with patrons and friends by streaming the event online.

Craobh Dugan was founded in 1978 in Clinton, New York as the local Central New York branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, itself founded in 1951, as an international organization dedicated to the promotion and preservation of traditional Irish music, dance, and language. As one of fifty North American off-shoots of the larger movement, Craobh Dugan not only performs traditional Irish music as it will in the virtual concert but also teaches the Irish language, Irish dance, history and lessons in Irish instruments to the greater Mohawk Valley community at large.

Craobh (pronounced “crave”) Dugan, “Craobh” the Irish for “clan” and “Dugan” the last name of two of the group’s founding members, is well-known locally and regionally for their lively takes on traditional Irish music, in instruments as well as singalongs, for dancing and for storytelling.

Craobh Dugan’s music is primarily what could be described as traditional Irish dance music, jigs, reels, hornpipes, tunes all across the spectrum of the Irish dance tradition. Of their arrangements with vocals, there are songs in both the English and Irish languages. They hope that this selection of songs and dances helps listeners understand that there is more to Irish music and culture than “Danny Boy” or “Irish Eyes Are Smiling” and that it is okay to celebrate one’s Irish heritage all the year-round, not just on Saint Patrick’s Day. They hope that in their listening the audience will hear the songs not just as Irish tradition but also as one of the fundamental roots of early American music, coming down from the Canadian maritime provinces into the Appalachian Mountains of the United States, influencing bluegrass, folk and American music to this day.

Craobh Dugan’s performance will be live-streamed Veteran’s Day Wednesday, November 11th at 7 PM via Zoom, using the Zoom Meeting ID code 990 2816 5529. For more information on Craobh Dugan, both in performance and in cultural education, you can check out their website, https://www.uticairish.org, or visit their Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/CraobhDugan/.
