Andrzej Duda, the Polish president, has said Poland has come under attack for its desire to defend traditional values and the Catholic lifestyle.
In an interview for the November issue of Il Timone, an Italian magazine, Duda said he was aware that Poland is currently under much pressure for trying to protect values such as "the traditional family model."
"There is strong pressure on us, there is often no room for dialogue, and Poland is simply attacked for wanting to protect the family, cultivate traditions and defend the Catholic lifestyle," the president said.
"We should not be ashamed of our identity," the head of state added.
The president went on to say that in the 20th century, Poland had to deal with totalitarian systems, but Poles were able to keep their identity. "We will keep it now and I hope to strengthen it even more," he said.
Referring to the Solidarity movement, which helped topple communism in Poland, Duda said his generation is marked in a special way by that fight for freedom.
"For this reason, I personally do not take freedom for granted, but as a task,” he said. “The struggle of Poles obliges me to do everything in my power to preserve it in many aspects, also in a new, modern sense.
"When I look at my compatriots, I feel that freedom is when we don't have to worry about tomorrow, when we feel safe in our homes," he added.
