Ketchikan’s school board may open its meetings by recognizing the region’s traditional inhabitants.

The proposal to add a land acknowledgment to its meetings follows the City Council’s decision to also honor the region’s original residents by acknowledging “the traditional first people of this land in Ketchikan, the Tongass Tlingit people.”

That and a few other items are up for debate Wednesday evening.

Ketchikan’s school board meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday by videoconference — in-person meetings are suspended while Ketchikan’s community risk level remains at Level 3. Members of the public can still submit comments to the board clerk by email, though — they’ll be read aloud during the meeting. The deadline is 3 p.m. Wednesday, and the email address is kerry.watson@k21schools.org. The meeting can be live-streamed at kgbsd.org/live.
