Chico Unified to remain in modified traditional schedule through end of semester - Chico Enterprise-Record

CHICO — Despite Butte County being moved to the most restrictive tier of the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy, no changes will be made to the school schedule for the remainder of the semester, the Chico Unified School District Board of Trustees decided during Wednesday night’s meeting.

The district will remain in the modified traditional schedule and use the a.m./p.m. schedule through the end of the semester, which is Dec. 18. Originally, the guidance model that the board had voted on in July stated that if the county is in the Purple Tier, or the most restrictive, that the distance learning model will be adopted.

The board has not yet decided on the learning model for the spring semester. That will be discussed during the Dec. 9 board meeting.

The board heard several speakers during the public comment portion. A few parents had pleaded to the board to not revert back to distance learning and praised the a.m./p.m. model while others had expressed that they wanted to see their children go back to school in-person full time. A couple of speakers also stated they wanted to see the a/b schedule be implemented. The board had ruled out adopting the a/b schedule for a modified traditional model for the spring semester during the Nov. 4 meeting.

“It is so clear that 95 percent of the parents do not want us to make any change in going back to online at any grade level,” said trustee Eileen Robinson. “There’s no way I’d support going online. It just makes no sense for the education, health and well-being of our kids.”

With Thanksgiving break next week for students, the members of the board didn’t want to change the schedule with the end of the semester coming up.

The board, along with representatives from Butte County Public Health, also discussed COVID-19 protocols during the meeting.

According to the district’s community dashboard, there have been 12 positive student cases and eight staff cases of COVID-19 since Aug. 17, the first day of school.

Tina Keene, the district’s director of State and Federal Programs, said that the majority of cases within Chico Unified school have been traced to not have spread within the classroom.

Board member Tom Lando was concerned if a student could test positive for COVID-19 and the school not know.

Monica Soderstrom of Butte County Public Health said there is a possibility for a school notification to be delayed but that “you can be reasonably assured that the school will know.”

When a student tests positive, the positive case is relayed to Butte County Public Health, which will then notify the school. The student’s parents can also notify the school of a positive case.

Wednesday’s meeting marked the final meeting for Board President Elizabeth Griffin and Board Clerk Linda Hovey. Trustee Kathleen Kaiser concluded the meeting with a tribute to Griffin and Hovey, who have served on the board for a combined 20 years.

“This is the last formal meeting of two very experienced and distinguished board members,” Kaiser said. “We are unable to salute them at this current time. I want to congratulate them both on their very long and dedicated service to this district.”

  • The board unanimously approved to sell obsolete textbooks for the money to be used to buy new textbooks.
  • The board unanimously pre-approved the construction of a new ag greenhouse at Chico High.
  • The board unanimously approved the removal of a deteriorating tree at Bidwell Junior High which will cost $1,800.

A previous version of this story had misquoted Tina Keene about cases spreading in the classroom.
