Lonzo Ball is ready for a new beginning with the Chicago Bulls. After spending the first four seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans, Ball signed a four-year, $85 million deal with Chicago this offseason.

But for Ball, a new beginning means a return to his old self. When asked about his role on the team during Monday's media availability, Ball said he expects to play as more of a traditional point guard.

"Talking to Billy [Donovan], just getting back to being a more traditional PG," Ball said. "Last year [with the Pelicans] was different for me but whatever the coach asks me, I'll do to the best of my abilities. This year, it looks like I'll be PG."

Ball started all 55 games he appeared in and averaged a career-high 14.6 points for New Orleans in the 2020-21 season. He also posted career bests in three-point percentage (37.8), field goal percentage (41.4) and free-throw percentage (78.1).

But Ball's average of 5.7 assists was the second-lowest of his career. He recorded 10 or more assists in just five games last year.

Ball entered the league as a pass-first point guard out of UCLA. After the Lakers selected him with the No. 2 overall pick in 2017, Ball averaged 7.2 assists as a rookie.

When asked about why he chose to sign with Chicago, Ball said he appreciates that he isn't being asked to do anything other than what he's naturally good at. He also mentioned Bulls All-Star Zach LaVine as a major factor in his decision.

"They didn't want me to change any part of my game, just to excel in the things I'm already comfortable doing," Ball said. "Zach played a big part as well."

Ball will look to help lead a young Bulls roster in 2021-22. Only four players on the team have at least six years of playing experience, including former All-Stars DeMar DeRozan and Nikola Vucevic. Starting point guard Coby White is recovering from shoulder surgery that will keep him sidelined until November.
