Tim DeRuyter debuts more traditional dime package for Oregon Ducks - OregonLive

EUGENE — Several names have changed but so too has the general structure of Oregon’s dime package.

Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter played the six-defensive backs personnel grouping on a third-and-nine during the second quarter of the win at Ohio State last week.

DeRuyter’s dime package featured three down linemen in Brandon Dorlus, Popo Aumavae and DJ Johnson with Adrian Jackson Jr. at Joker as a wide edge rusher against the left tackle. Middle linebacker Noah Sewell also lined up to the field between Jackson and cornerback Dontae Manning because Ohio State was in a trips receiver set. The secondary had Bennett Williams as the box safety with Manning and Trikweze Bridges to the field with Bryan Addison as the field safety and Mykael Wright and Verone McKinley III on the boundary side.

“I think it gives us a real athletic look,” Williams said. “Gets a lot of our playmakers out there, good coverage guys out there and speed all over the field. We can cover guys but then if it comes down to a run situation we’re able to make that play. A lot of cerebral guys out there too, so guys that know what they’re doing and obviously great pass rushers as well.”

The play ended in a pass breakup by McKinley and Ohio State was forced to punt.

If Kayvon Thibodeaux were available he undoubtedly would be on the field, most likely in place of Johnson. But what makes DeRuyter’s dime more traditional than the version Andy Avalos ran last season with the Ducks is the inclusion of both defensive tackles over an additional pass rusher, a role filled last season by Andrew Faoliu.

DeRuyter also uses a different combination of corners and safeties. Where Avalos used Nick Pickett and Steve Stephens IV deep last season, DeRuyter is keeping McKinley on the field but on the boundary side and Addison comes in.

“One of the things that I think Bryan does a nice job of is playing that deep safety position because he’s got such speed and range,” DeRuyter said. “I think playing our dime package for him is ideal. It’s something that I think as he continues to play he’ll get more confidence and hopefully that’ll translate to more normal down and distance situations.”

Even against a pass-heavy attack like Ohio State, the Ducks didn’t use dime a lot. Their end of half personnel was more base but playing deep and end of game was prevent defense and not necessarily reflective of a true personnel grouping at other times in the game.

As a result, Oregon didn’t cause as much disruption in dime as it did at times last season but it’s a personnel set of note and worth monitoring once Pac-12 play begins.
