How warm did it get Sunday, and did it set a record in Syracuse? - syracuse.com

Syracuse, N.Y. — There’s no question it was a beautiful, sunny Sunday in Central New York. But just how warm did it get, and did it set a record?

The high temperature in Syracuse was 78 degrees, set at 3 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. That tied for the ninth-warmest May 3 on record in Syracuse, the weather service said.

The record high temperature for May 3 is 88 degrees, set in 1944 and again in 2001.

On May 3, 1965, Syracuse nearly set a record when temperatures reached 86.

In 1913, a record was set when temperatures reached 85.

In 1942, Syracuse saw temperatures reach 83 degrees.

Then, in 2018, the high temperature hit 82 degrees in Syracuse.

In 1980, Syracuse’s high temperature reached 79 degrees.

And now four times in Syracuse’s weather history books — in 1937, 1993, 2015 and today — temperatures reached 78 degrees. That was good enough to tie the ninth-warmest temperatures on record.

But in a classic turn of Central New York weather, the warmth won’t last.

The National Weather Service earlier Sunday issued a freeze watch for Onondaga, southern Cayuga, Seneca and Yates counties. Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 28 degrees Monday night into Tuesday, which could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, as well as potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing.
