Auburn officials cancel traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating during COVID pandemic and encourage trunk - MassLive.com

Auburn officials said they are canceling traditional door-to-door trick-or-treating this year during the coronavirus pandemic but are endorsing another alternative.

“While we recognize that canceling traditional door-to-door trick or treat this year may be disappointing to children, we believe that canceling is the responsible decision to protect the health and safety of all of our residents during this global pandemic,” the town said in a statement.

Auburn had canceled while the town was still listed in the moderate risk or yellow category for COVID-19 spread by Massachusetts health officials. The town, as of Wednesday evening, was moved into the red, or high-risk category. Worcester and Leicester have canceled the tradition because they are in the red.

Town officials also looked at statewide numbers, which are increasing, the statement said.

“While we recognize that people are frustrated by the disruptions that Covid-19 has caused to their normal daily lives as well as to the traditional events and celebrations they typically enjoy, we also have to acknowledge that municipal officials have a responsibility to protect the health and welfare of our citizens and to discourage activities that could be harmful,” the statement said.

Instead, the town has partnered with Faith Church and Cub Scout Pack 53 to host a “trunk or treat” event.

Families are required to reserve a time slot and the event is limited to about 650 vehicles.

Volunteers will wear costumes and decorate their vehicles in child friendly themes. They will also hand out candy in a “contactless manner,” the statement said. Families must stay in their vehicles and wear a mask, the statement said.

There will also be a competition with trophies.

First, second and third place trophies will be awarded to the best decorated or most innovative vehicles. An additional prize will be awarded for the most innovative contactless candy delivery system, the statement said.

Still, truck or treat events are considered “high risk" by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The town says it is mitigating some of that risk by adding additional safety measures to the typical event, such as contactless candy delivery, mask requirements and only handing out wrapped candy.

“We are excited to collaborate with these community partners to present this safer alternative to traditional Halloween events,” the website states. “Of course, despite the measures that will be taken to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 for this event, it is important to note that no event can be categorized as completely risk-free so families need to decide the best and safest manner to celebrate Halloween this year.”

The trunk or treat event is on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Dr. Arthur and Dr. Martha Pappas Recreation Complex at 203.5 Pakachoag St. In the case of severe weather, the event will be held on Sunday, Nov. 1 at the same time.
