TAHLEQUAH – The Cherokee Nation’s 15 voting districts on Oct. 13 were given what leaders call traditional names such as Goingsnake, Cooweescoowee and Redbird.

“Traditionally, our districts were named after something of this body’s choosing, not numbered districts,” Dist. 7 Tribal Councilor Canaan Duncan said in late September. “To me, that’s the purpose of the act. I think it’s a good thing we’re doing this.”

Approved in a 16-1 vote during the monthly Tribal Council meeting, the act deems it “necessary and proper to recognize the traditional Cherokee names of the representative districts of the Cherokee Nation.”

It adds the following names to their respective districts:

• Dist.1, Hulbert, Cherokee West;

• Dist. 2, Tahlequah, Cherokee Northeast;

• Dist. 3, Tenkiller, Cherokee South;

• Dist. 4, Three Rivers;

• Dist. 5, Redbird;

• Dist. 6, Sequoyah;

• Dist. 7, Flint, Trail of Tears West;

• Dist. 8, Goingsnake, Trail of Tears East;

• Dist. 9, Saline, Delaware South;

• Dist. 10, Delaware, Delaware North;

• Dist. 11, Craig;

• Dist. 12, Cooweescoowee, West Cooweescoowee;

• Dist. 13, Gadusi;

• Dist. 14, Cooweescoowee, Central; and

• Dist. 15, Cooweescoowee, South.

Tribal Councilor Keith Austin cast the lone vote against the measure. When CN leaders discussed the proposal in committee on Sept. 24, he called it “an honorable effort,” but questioned some of the names.

“Now the names that are in front of us are Hulbert, not a traditional name; Tenkiller, not a traditional name; Three Rivers, not a traditional name; Redbird, not a traditional name; and Gadusi, not one of our traditional names,” he said. “I don’t see this as actually accomplishing what the act says it is set out to do. I want us to honor our history, but I believe instead of honoring our history, we’re replacing it with names of our choosing.”

The act’s sponsor, Tribal Council Speaker Joe Byrd, said the names were at the council’s discretion.

“If you go out in the rural areas and you ask them if Redbird’s not traditional, if Tahlequah’s not traditional, Tenkiller’s not traditional, I don’t know how far you’ll get with that discussion,” Byrd said. “Traditional according to who? The European traditional people or the Cherokee traditional people? To me, those names are pretty traditional. And if you want to keep your district with the same number or name, then really you have that prerogative. We’ve left that open for you.”
