EAST ORANGE, NJ - Mayor Ted R. Green and the East Orange Department of Health and Human Services today announced a plan to safely celebrate Halloween as COVID-19 cases begin to surge in the city.
While emphasizing social distancing and other safety precautions issued by the state and the CDC, the city has decided to alter its original plans and merge its Trunk or Treats with the Drive-In Movie Night on Saturday, October 31 beginning at 7pm at East Orange Campus High School located at 344 Prospect Street.
Showing the 2018 update of the classic spooky film, “Halloween,” the drive-in movie will allow for a responsible celebration that minimizes large gatherings in the city while calling on both children and adults to abide by COVID-19 safety precautions and limiting the spread of the virus.
“This year, more than ever, it is important to celebrate Halloween safely and responsibly,” said Mayor Green. “The safety of our residents is our top priority, and with the massive turnout that happens every year for our annual Halloween events — including the haunted house and trunk or treats — it is not feasible to keep people spread out enough to maintain safe social distancing. With the Drive-In movie, we have created guidelines so that everyone can enjoy Halloween without putting our community at additional risk.”
Traditional events such as our 1st and 4th Ward Trunk or Treats originally planned for earlier in the day will be folded into the Movie Night. Staff from the Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be handing out pre-packaged candy bags and snacks to movie-goers. Costumes are encouraged by all attending and masks will still be required even if a person is wearing a mask as part of their costume.
Due to the increase in cases, The East Orange Sustainable Food Alliance Pumpkin Patch Event has been cancelled for in-person pumpkin picking, however, those who have pre-registered for the event will have a pumpkin goody bag delivered to their home.
As a cautionary measure to keep residents protected and limit the spread of the virus, Mayor Green is also encouraging residents to refrain from trick-or-treating. Giving out candy door-to-door is also highly discouraged. For those who are interested in participating in Halloween, the Health Department asks that residents consider an alternative and start new traditions such as:
