Health experts recommend not participating in "traditional" trick-or-treating - 47abc - WMDT

WORCESTER CO., Md. – Worcester County health officials are recommending people participate in “low risk activities” this Halloween weekend.

Some examples of low risk activities include carving pumpkins outside at a safe distance, having a virtual costume contest or a spooky family movie night. If you are collecting candy, they say it would be safest to do so with only a few close relatives. In fact, in accordance with CDC guidelines, they do not recommend participating in traditional door to door trick-or-treating this year.

“I can’t think of any jurisdictions that are supporting it right now. I believe most towns and communities have said don’t do it or strongly recommend against it. So just the overall thing would be don’t get candy from people you don’t know right now,” says Travis Brown with the Worcester County Health Department.

If you are handing out candy this year, the CDC says one risk reducing idea is to prepare zip lock baggies with candy and leave them outside for trick-or-treaters instead of having kids reach into a shared bowl of candy.
