In a normal year, Detroit Lakes High School's Homecoming festivities would begin this Monday, Oct. 5, with the coronation of the king and queen. That would be followed up by a full week of activities, including dress-up days, volleyball and football games, a parade, a dance, and much more.
This year, however, COVID-19 pandemic restrictions have forced the high school to modify the festivities, and change the name as well: This coming week, Oct. 5-8, is "Spirit Week" at DLHS.
"There will not be a traditional homecoming next week," said DLHS Activities Director Rob Nielsen. "With current restrictions on gatherings the Student Council felt it would not work out the way they would like. We will be having a Spirit Week instead.
"The student council is hopeful we can do something similar to a traditional homecoming later in the school year," he added. "They are in the process of finalizing those plans."
"The schedule we are planning is doing dress-up days for the entire week, along with doing some events at the (boys and girls) soccer games on Tuesday, and streaming the volleyball (game) and swim meet on the football field (screens) on Thursday," says DLHS Student Council President Zack Oistad.
Dress-up days for Spirit Week will be as follows: Tourist Day, Ugly Sweater Day, Laker Pride, College Day, and Comfy Day.
More festivities usually associated with Homecoming Week could show up during the school year as well.
"We are hoping we are going to be able to schedule some more homecoming events later in the school year," Oistad said, adding that one of the options they are considering is replacing the annual winter Snow Ball with a homecoming dance.
