COLUMBIA CITY, Ind. (WPTA-TV) - These days it can be hard to get kids away from screens, but one program in Columbia City is changing that.
It's a Giving Gardens program called the Farm and Forest School. Giving Gardens is an urban farm in Whitley County. The Farm and Forest School meets every other week in several locations to teach kids about nature and how food grows.
"With the lack of green space especially in urban communities I think parents want their kids to get outside and experience nature and build a relationship with nature," Executive Director Rachel Alexander said.
She says she notices a change in the kids that go through the program.
"We have you know found from experience with kids at the farm that when they are a part of growing the food and harvesting the food they are more excited to eat the food," Alexander said, "so children who might kind of be iffy about vegetables when they come to the farm they are they are sticking carrots and cucumbers and tomatoes in their mouth and their parents are often like "oh they won't eat this at home."
Right now the group meets during the week so it is mostly home schooled elementary students. Alexander says there's already a wait list for the summer sessions.
They plan to expand the program in the future. Giving Gardens is building a new preschool building at the farm in Columbia City. Their goal is to launch the preschool in 2022.
