GIRLS BKB: REESE 48, CASS CITY 21

After seeing its 11-year run of Greater Thumb West championships come to a halt last season, Reese was on a mission to get back on top this time around.

The Rockets returned the summit Thursday, downing Cass City 48-21 to clinch at least a share of the league crown. Reese finished second to Caro a year ago, the first time since 2008 that it didn’t claim the trophy.

But the Rockets (11-0, 10-0) have been nothing short of perfect in their quest for the crown. They bolted to a 29-11 lead by halftime en route to the win. Maddi Osantowski poured in 19 points, including a 14-point outburst in the second quarter. She sank five 3-pointers in the game.

Aydan Dalak scored 10 points and Andi Reinert nine in the win.

Saylar Cuthrell led Cass City (5-8, 4-7) with 11 points while Abbey Halabis tallied six.

BOYS BKB: BEAVERTON 45, SANFORD MERIDIAN 35

One reign ended and another began, as Beaverton knocked off four-time defending champion Sanford Meridian 45-35 to clinch at least a share of the Jack Pine Conference crown.

Beaverton (11-0, 11-0) returns to championship status for the first time since 2016. It can claim the JPC title outright with one win in its final three games.

Brayde Keeley delivered a 14-point, nine-rebound performance in the big win. Carson Oldani scored 14 points while Trent Reed had six points and nine boards.

Meridian (6-5, 5-5) saw its run of four straight outright JPC titles come to an end.

BOYS BKB: SWAN VALLEY 49, ESSEXVILLE GARBER 46

Shorthanded Essexville Garber made a run at longshot victory, coming up short in a 49-46 loss to Swan Valley.

The Dukes, playing without six players due to contact tracing, led 20-18 at halftime before Swan Valley went on a 22-12 third-quarter run. Garber (3-8) scratched its way back to within three points but couldn’t pull off the win.

Jack Mularz had a big game with 18 points while Brayden Swartout notched 11 points and eight rebounds. Owen Prokopenko and Jack Day each contributed six points while Camren Rowley came through with an eight-rebound effort.

BOYS BKB: CARROLLTON 75, PINCONNING 57

Pinconning had a last-minute opening and filled it with a challenge, taking on Carrollton in a non-league matchup.

The Spartans hung tough but couldn’t overcome Carrollton’s 27-9 second-quarter spree, falling 75-57.

Tommy Yanoski fronted the Spartans (8-5) with 11 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Zach Johnson scored 14 points, Gavin Almeida eight and Nathan Laures six.

Carrollton (7-4) featured a four-pronged attack as Tay Jones scored 16, Chris Coleman 15, D.J. Voltz 14 and Marco Hernandez 10.

BOYS BKB: HEMLOCK 52, STANDISH-STERLING 45

The Tri-Valley West’s first-place showdown lived up to its billing, as Standish-Sterling gave front-running Hemlock a run for its money.

But the Panthers couldn’t pull it off in the end, falling 52-45 and seeing its title hopes come to an end.

Standish-Sterling (9-3, 6-2) trailed 29-21 at halftime but closed the margin to 37-35 entering the final stanza. No. 6-ranked Hemlock (12-0, 8-0) held tight down the stretch, clinching at least a share of the league title.

Cole Prout led Standish-Sterling with 15 points while Chase Raymond added 14 and Truman King seven.

Hemlock, which hit eight 3-pointers in the game, was led by Michael Zolinski with 14 and Brayden Green with 12. The Huskies hit 8 of 9 free throws down the stretch to close out the win.

Frankenmuth came out firing, lighting up the scoreboard with 24 first-quarter points en route to a 71-37 win over John Glenn in Tri-Valley East action.

“They were dominating tonight,” Glenn coach Dale Clyde said. “There’s a reason why they’re the No. 5 team in the state. Their bigs played well and they shot incredibly well.”

Frankenmuth (12-0, 11-0) hit 12 3-pointers in the contest. Ben Reinert led the way with 21 points.

Glenn (4-9, 4-8), which trailed 42-13 at the half, got seven points from freshman Trevor Hartman and six apiece from Garett Glazier and Wyatt Weyrowske.

Still playing without a handful of players due to contact tracing, Gladwin found a way to win.

The Flying G’s started fast and never let Clare turn the tide, snaring a 56-45 victory in Jack Pine Conference play. Gladwin (6-5, 6-5) led 24-15 at the half and reached the six-win mark for the first time since 2016.

“It was a nice bounce-back win for us,” Gladwin coach Mike Verellen said. “This hopefully will be our last short-handed game, as we are supposed to have our quarantine guys back on Saturday. We got off to a great start, thanks in large part to our sophomore call ups.”

Wilson Bragg sank four 3-pointers in an 18-point performance for Gladwin. Ethan Shea scored 13 points, Nick Wheeler nine and Logan Kokotovich eight.

Clare (3-7, 3-7) was led by Jacob Recker with 17 and Miles Haggart with 11.

GIRLS BKB: MIO 51, HALE 38
