MOUNT STERLING, Ky. — The Traditional Bank board of directors has announced that Andy Baker has begun serving as chief executive officer as of Jan. 1, 2020.
Dan Mason was promoted into Baker’s previous role of president. These changes follow the 2019 retirement of CEO William “Bill” Alverson, who remains on the board of directors and continues to serve the bank in a business development capacity.
Board Chairman Bill Bramblet said of the transition, “Just as Bill and Andy successfully led our bank by applying their unique strengths to the roles of CEO and president, I feel confident that Andy and Dan will complement each other. Each brings significant banking knowledge, a thoughtful approach to decision making and a sincere appreciation for our employees and culture. Our customers, staff and shareholders are in very good hands.”
Baker joined Traditional Bank in 1985 and played a key role in the bank’s only merger, which took place in 1988 and resulted in the integration of two Mount Sterling-based banks. He has provided leadership for numerous operational functions, helping to guide Traditional Bank’s people and processes through an intensive growth period. In addition to holding the chief leadership role inside the bank, he also serves as vice chairman of the board and its parent company Traditional Bancorporation Inc.
When asked about the changing landscape of banking over the past 35 years, Baker said, “Technology has certainly affected the banking experience, both operationally and in the ways that our customers interact with us. But in many ways loan and deposit needs remain the same. Regardless how our customers choose to do their banking, whether using our app or visiting a branch, we work to provide value and deliver our products with exceptional service in a secure environment.
“The fact that our bank has remained independent makes us more adaptable and better prepared to manage change in a positive way. Decisions are made locally, with input from team members and board members who live and work in the communities we serve. Years of experience provide important insight into how market trends have affected our customers in the past. We’re able to combine that knowledge with first-hand feedback from today’s customers and achieve a deeper understanding of how best to meet their needs.”
Baker is a graduate of Montgomery County High School and Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He is president of the Montgomery County affiliate for Habit for Humanity, an advisory director for the Montgomery County Area Technology Center, a local trustee for the United Way of the Bluegrass, and a member of St. Patrick Church Parish and finance council. He and his wife Mary live in Mount Sterling, where the bank’s operational headquarters and Baker’s office are located.
Mason joined the organization in 2010, serving as the bank’s chief lending officer the past 10 years. He brought to the role 20 years banking experience, including time spent in credit analysis and commercial lending. He earned his bachelor’s degree in business finance from Colorado State University and graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. In his role as president, Mason will oversee the bank’s Lexington-based business development team, the commercial cash management department as well as provide senior leadership for the branch banking experience.
When asked about his priorities as president, Mason reiterated the bank’s commitment to creating customer value by saying, “As strong as we are at building lasting client relationships we know that we can always be better. Our management team is focused on continuing to elevate the customer experience across all touch points, for both business and personal banking needs. This means investing in our people and developing them into knowledgeable, well-rounded bankers who are proactive and offer our customers smart solutions.”
Outside of his role as bank president, Mason serves as the finance chair for the Bluegrass Airport board of directors and the board chair for the Child Care Council of Kentucky Inc. He maintains an office at the bank’s Palumbo Drive Banking Center and lives in Lexington with his wife Mary Beth.
