Recently, during the Australian Open tennis tournament, John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova came out against tennis champion Margaret Court, the winner of 24 major tennis tournaments. They said she is homophobic and has said terrible things against the LGBT community. (Court is now a pastor in Australia and, when teaching on marriage and family, has quoted the biblical book of Genesis, which states that God’s plan for marriage is a man and a woman for a lifetime.) McEnroe and Navratilova are campaigning to have Court’s name removed from a stadium which had been named for her.
The definition of homophobia, from the Webster’s dictionary online, includes an “irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.”
I don’t know Margaret Court and have not followed her life or preaching, but I realize that we who believe in traditional marriage are in trouble if, any time we state what the Bible plainly teaches about marriage and family, we are labeled as homophobic.
I am a pastor who also teaches the great and wonderful truth from the Bible that God’s plan is for marriage to be one man with one woman. I do not have a fear or an aversion to homosexuality, and I don’t think Margaret Court does either. We just believe the Bible.
The stadium in Melbourne, Australia, was named after Court because of her incredible talent and accomplishments in the tennis world. Let’s not discriminate against people who still believe in traditional marriage. It is the backbone of our society.
