Registration is open for the Traditional Games

Volunteers, vendors and athletes can register for the 2020 Traditional Games.

The games are co-sponsored by Sealaska Heritage Institute and will be held March 7-8 at Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé.

The games are open to everyone 11 and older. This year’s event will include a free market for artists and vendors.

University of Alaska Southeast creative writing student accepted into prestigious program

Callie Ziegler, a recent graduate from the University of Alaska Southeast was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program at Florida State University, according to UAS.

In addition Ziegler was awarded a teaching assistantship and fully funded tuition waiver. Only 12 fiction writers are accepted into this program each year.

She will start the new MFA program in the fall of 2020.

Ziegler is the senior editor for the literary journal Tidal Echoes, mentored by faculty adviser Emily Wall.

Sealaska Heritage Institute picks jurrors picked for art show

A well-known Tlingit and Haida artist and a renowned art historian were chosen to judge Sealaska Heritage Institute’s next Juried Art Show and Competition.

SHI, through recommendations by its Native Artist Committee, also named a Tlingit visual artist as juror for its Juried Youth Art Exhibit.

Weaver Deborah Head, or Aanutein, and art historian Steve Henrikson will judge the Juried Art Show and Competition. Tlingit artist Jackson Polys will adjudicate the Juried Youth Art Exhibit.

The Juried Art Show will open June 5 at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum, and winners will be announced on June 10, the first day of Celebration 2020. Celebration, a biennial dance-and-culture festival sponsored by SHI every even year, is scheduled to run through June 13.

The Juried Youth Art Exhibit is open to students in grades 6-12. Art accepted for the show will be on display at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center from June 5-27.
