Greek authorities are warning citizens that the traditional celebration of Easter is out of bounds this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Minister of Development Adonis Georgiadis on Sunday ended hopes that Greeks would be able to travel to their villages in the countryside or the islands for the traditional Easter feast of April 19.
“The quarantine will definitely be in place by then, and it is important to say this early,” Georgiadis said during an interview on Skai TV.
He called on everyone to be patient for at least a month and explained that while the country has done well in managing the coronavirus crisis it would be “a very big mistake” to loosen the lockdown and allow the virus to be transmitted to other areas in Greece.
He also extended the measure for the closure cafes, bars, restaurants, retail shops, businesses, museums, archaeological sites, cinemas and theaters and sports facilities until April 11, 2020.
Earlier, Minister of Health Vassilis Kikilias stressed that “we have a very critical month ahead” and warned that “no one should relax, we must stay home”.
