RAPID CITY, S.D. — The first ever Lakota Food Summit kicked off Tuesday afternoon at the Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn, and continues through Thursday.
The event focuses on Lakota traditions, food sovereignty and community education.
Also in attendance are several Native American chefs offering traditional recipes with ingredients found in our own backyard.
“Just where we are in the history today,” says Sean Sherman, Founder of Sioux Chef. “You know cause we have food from all over the world in our towns but nothing that represents the land that we’re standing on. So we really want to bring awareness to indigenous foods, indigenous peoples, indigenous cultures and the diversity of all this indigenous food and flavor all across North America.”
The event was organized by the non-profit organization Thunder Valley who hopes this will be the first of many Lakota Food Summits.
