Strum away the winter blues at PWPL's traditional music jam - UpperMichigansSource.com

MARQUETTE The traditional music jam at the Peter White Public Library is a great way to beat the winter blues.

Musicians of all ages and skill levels are welcome to drop in from 2 until 5 p.m. every second Saturday of the month now through May for a relaxed jams session. Each session is free and open to the public.

Musicians simply bring their favorite instruments in and start jamming on tunes ranging from traditional folk music circa the early 1800s to more contemporary songs.

Carolyn McManis, Library Programming Coordinator at PWPL says you don't even have to be a musician to attend. You just need a love of music.

"If you don't play an instrument but you like the music you can come out and listen. We always have coffee and cookies for both players and listeners and we take requests at times too,” McManis declared.

Spectators will notice various acoustic instruments including guitars, mandolins, fiddles, accordions, auto-harps, harmonicas, drums and more. Musicians should avoid bringing electric instruments to these sessions as they tend to overpower the other instruments in a setting such as this, according to McManis.

McManis also says for anyone strumming at home, sessions like this are a great way to grow as a musician.

"It is definitely a lot better. There's a lot more comradery. There's an opportunity to learn from others which I really enjoy. I've learned a ton of songs by coming to this group. And just to be with other people who share a similar passion is nice,” McManis announced.

If you’re still new to your instrument, fear not. The occasional bad note won’t put a damper on the fun.

"There are lots of different venues for jamming in Marquette. But this is just kind of a nice one to get yourself back into the groove of music. It's very low-key. Everybody is pretty open and everybody is pretty friendly.

Traditional music fans have even more reason to celebrate. The second annual 2020 Winter Roots Folk Festival returns to Marquette next Saturday, February 15th.

Kids under 12 can attend for free. Buttons are $12 for the full day of music, dancing and fun from 10:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.
