La Crosse, Wis. (WXOW) - When the temperatures drop below freezing, many Wisconsin anglers can be found on the ice doing their best to catch fish.
Ice fishing was once used as a means of survival, but now it is a hobby that is passed down from generation to generation.
"I feel like a lot of it has to do with the tradition of growing up in Wisconsin," Owner of Lenzview Guide Service Dominic Lenz said. "And as you can tell, with a lot of people out, it's really popular."
Ice fishing is so popular in Wisconsin that about a quarter of the fish caught every year come through the ice.
It's a hobby that allows people to enjoy the outdoors during the cold months of winter, but it is a past time that takes patience.
"Some days it's not uncommon for me to go and drill 100 or 200 holes and maybe not have that successful of a day," Lenz said.
This year mild temperatures has kept the ice in our area unpredictable, so it is important to keep safety in mind.
"You just really gotta know the area," Fisheries Biologist with the Wisconsin DNR David Heath said. "If there is any current at all, just stay away. If there's open water nearby, don't even try it."
According to the DNR, ice should be at least 4 inches thick for fishing and 8-12 inches thick for a small vehicle.
