Tipp Hill’s traditional Painting of the Shamrock postponed due to coronavirus - syracuse.com

Another annual Syracuse St. Patrick’s Day tradition has fallen victim to the COVID-19 coronavirus outbreak.

The painting of the big green shamrock under the green-over-red traffic light on Tipperary Hill will not take place at its traditional time of midnight tonight (the dawn of St. Patrick’s Day itself). A new date has not been set.

Jeffrey “Coach Coz" Costello, co-organizer of the 43-year-old event, posted the notice today on Facebook.

“Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone,” Costello wrote. "Much to my chagrin we are Postponing the Painting of the Shamrock. If you have an opportunity at midnight tonight remember Matt Jackson, Chris Elm, Pat O’Neill and Scott Mulholland and ask them not to haunt me for this decision! Again it’s just a postponement will make an announcements when appropriate.. On behalf of Bonez Roesch and the Mulholland family, we thank you for your understanding and support! Coach Coz."

Costello and Jerry “Bonez” Roesch are among the organizers of the 15-minute ritual that takes place at Milton Avenue and Tompkins Street, where local legend has it that young Irish kids used to throw rocks or stones at the light when it was still red (for the British) over green (for the Irish).

The midnight event includes the artistic application of a gallon of green paint, some piping and drumming, the reading of the names of Tipp Hill residents and friends who passed on in the previous year followed by the singing of “Danny Boy” by Dennis Leogue.

This postponement follows the suspension of last Saturday’s St. Patrick’s Parade in downtown Syracuse and a delay in the annual St. Baldrick’s childhood cancer fundraiser at Kitty Hoynes Irish Pub in Armory Square. That event had been scheduled for March 29; a new date has not been announced.

And Tuesday, St. Patrick’s Day, will take on a different feel across New York state, which is requiring the closing of all bars and restaurants in an effort to contain the coronavirus.

Followers of the event applauded the decision to postpone it due to the coronavirus.

“Great decision for the right reason,” Don McNamara commented on Costello’s Facebook post. “The original Stone Throwers are smiling down on all of us☘️”
