Parents Prepare for JCPS's Traditional Instruction - Spectrum News 1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - On Tuesday, April 7, Spring Break is over for Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) students as they head back to class. However, the new set-up will be from home and online with non-traditional instruction (NTI).

“I would be remiss if I said that I was not nervous, but I am a little bit,” said Katie Danner whose 8-year-old son Bennett attends Norton Elementary School in Louisville.

Danner probably feels like most parents right now whose children across Kentucky are doing NTI or will about to start.

“You know just going in with our hearts open and just being willing to ride the wave as it comes with us,” are some of the thoughts Jenna Burns has before her two boys in first and fourth grade jump into NTI.

However, during an uncertain time for everyone, both Burns and Danner are doing what they can to prepare beforehand to make it a little easier for everyone.

The dining room is where Danner’s son will have class because it’s a well lit space and offers less distraction.

“He does have a TV in his room so obviously we don’t want him to be in his room, and I think I want to be around so it’s easier to have him in a space where I am usually with him. So the dining room has the biggest table,” Danner told Spectrum News 1.

Burns and her husband worked from home before COVID-19. Now with their two boys at home, the whole family will each have their work stations at the dining room table.

“We’re all just experiencing different emotions and going through it so we thought what better way than to just do this as a family all together, Burns said.

Burns said each kid also has their own study space in their room and a reading area set-up in the house.

“Just so they have some variety in their day, they can move around a bit and not feel like they are just in one place all day long doing their work,” Burns said.

JCPS’s NTI doesn’t have to be done during normal school hours so students and families can do the work when it works for them. Danner said getting her eight-year-old to focus will be the biggest challenge. Therefore, having a routine for him to study in the morning so he can play outside afterward will be key, but having flexibility also helps.

“My husband is essential so I’m hopeful that if [Bennett] needs help with math that maybe that’s something we do at night with dad because I’m not really good at helping him with that already,” Danner said laughing.

Burns said her kids will stick to a schedule that mimics what her kids do at Tully Elementary School from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm.

“Having that routine and that schedule in place not only helps them, but it helps me be more productive and my husband be more productive because we can schedule meetings and calls when we know what they have going on,” Burns said.

Both moms agreed that breaks will be key for success, too.

“You know if we’re having a bad day we can take a little extra break to work out some of the wiggles or that energy they might have,” Burns said.

Because after-all, in this new normal, everyone is learning.

“Everybody is in the same boat here so I think that makes me feel feel a little bit better as a mom,” Danner said.

Parents needing help JCPS has an online toolkit to help out. It offers parents the chance to get familiar with their child’s NTI program before Tuesday.

JCPS schools are currently scheduled to open on Monday, May 4, but until then all classes will be taught by NTI.
