Wolf, Levine say traditional graduation ceremonies, events 'unlikely' - York Daily Record

High school seniors have missed final sports seasons, proms and closing out the last few months of the school year with their classmates.

And unless something changes in a hurry, it doesn't look like traditional graduations are going to be held this year either. Parts of Pennsylvania are set to start reopening on May 8.

Most colleges have already canceled in-person graduations, which normally take place in the early part of May.

High school graduations usually start around Memorial Day weekend, so there is an outside chance some will still be able to be held. For others, their ceremony might have a different look.

York Suburban (May 27) and Dallastown (June 2) have already canceled their in-person ceremonies and are looking for alternatives. Susquehannock is considering having something later in the summer.

Gov. Tom Wolf on Monday tweeted a message of hope and understanding to Pennsylvania's Class of 2020.

"The 2019 novel coronavirus has made it impossible for traditional graduation ceremonies to take place," Wolf tweeted. "And it also means you're missing out on a lot of other important gatherings like graduation parties and senior sendoffs.

"A lot of you are probably feeling angry about this -- and you have a right to feel that way because you've been dealt a band hand."

When asked about the tweet at her daily briefing, Sec. of Health Dr. Rachel Levine agreed with the sentiment, and reminded folks that even a move from red to yellow wouldn't allow for traditional ceremonies.

"We know that school has been canceled for the rest of the school year, and we're not going to allow large gatherings even in yellow zones, so I think that that's a fair assumption, is that graduations will have to be remote," she said.
