Area's largest district explores alternatives to traditional graduation - KWTX

KILLEEN, Texas (KWTX) The Killeen ISD, the largest school district in Central Texas, is exploring alternatives to a traditional graduation ceremony for its high school seniors in light of restrictions in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

One possible option is a virtual graduation, the district said in a press release Tuesday evening.

“Unless circumstances begin to change, holding traditional commencement exercises, will pose significant challenges to ensuring the health and well-being of all graduates, staff members and family members,” the district said.

“We cannot begin to express the disappointment we feel as a district for our seniors and their families during this time.”

The district is urging relatives of graduating seniors who are making plans to travel to Central Texas for commencement exercises “analyze cancellation policies associated with travel plans closely.”

Should the district decide on a virtual commencement, the ceremony would be available online, on the KSID-TV channel, on DVD and in a downloadable format.

“While a virtual ceremony will never replace a traditional ceremony, it ensures that our graduating seniors will be recognized and celebrated for the culmination of hard work they have accomplished over the past thirteen years, the district said.

KSID campuses will remain closed until at least May 4.
