Jamestown prom postponed to traditional date - Jamestown Sun

JHS has postponed the prom, originally scheduled for March 28, to April 25 because of the coronavirus pandemic. COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus, has canceled in-class meetings between teachers and students and the Jamestown Public Schools has switched to online or distance learning methods. Jamestown activities director Jim Roaldson said while the school is adjusting to new educational methods, spring activities have been almost an afterthought.

While understandable, the cancellation or postponement of activities have upset a number of Blue Jays.

"A lot of the kids here are kind of upset because it kind of throws off their routine — their normalcy," said Mike Dietz, a JHS prom adviser. "I know that when the decisions were being made if we were going to have school (in-person classes) or not, a lot of the kids were worried about if we were going to have prom. That was one of the first questions I had to respond to."

The prom committee led by junior class advisers like Dietz and high school physical science teacher Amber Roers had scheduled the dance for earlier in the spring to try and avoid conflicts with other spring activities. The traditional weekend the prom is held is the last weekend of April. The final weekend in April is free of activity conflicts.

"The springs are always really busy," Dietz said. "There are spring sports, there's a lot of music involved, there are all different types of testing that we have to get through. Then you start dealing with Easter and that takes another weekend away and then you have kids getting ready for graduation and those types of things. We were trying to lighten the burden for the students by going earlier in the spring versus later."

With a free date weeks away, Dietz is hopeful the student body will be able to come together and celebrate. Roaldson added that the school would like to do something in place of prom if it comes to light that the coronavirus is still too infectious.

"We had everything lined up and we still do — we've been able to adjust on the fly," Dietz said. "We still have the DJ we had first got on the original date and they are able to come to the April 25 date as of right now."

The committee headed up on the student end by junior class president Lauryn Hibl and the rest of the junior class board. Any 11th-grader can participate in the planning and set up of the dance. Juniors and seniors are able to attend the dance with a date under the age of 21.

"I think a lot of us are sad but since it is postponed we still have that hope of getting it," Hibl said. "A lot of things can happen in a couple of weeks and we have to play by all of the rules of the state and how we're are handling this crisis."

Hibl said the extra month of planning could help to make the spring dance even better than originally planned. The theme for this year's prom was "The Roaring 20s." The extra time for preparation could prove helpful but Hibl said at this point just having a dance would satisfy the crew of juniors and seniors.

"A lot of people have already bought their dresses and gotten their flowers ordered," Hibl said. "It's just an event that you can look back on and see that you had fun with your friends. You get to dress up and have those pictures and memories to cherish."

Cherishing memories is something Roaldson and Dietz are committed to seeing happen. It could be on the dance floor or another type of event that can give students - particularly Blue Jay seniors - a proper way to close out the school year.

"Our goal is to have prom," Dietz said. "Whether that can happen or not, there has got to be a lot of things that are above our pay grade, to make the decision to have prom or not. We'd like to be able to have it but we understand that the safety of our students is what's most important."
