Across the Valley, people find new ways to celebrate traditional milestones - WFMJ

Across the Valley, people are making the best out of this tough time by finding new ways to celebrate traditional milestones.

In Champion, Esther Urey turned 90 years-old. Her family celebrated by holding a small parade in her honor.

"Oh, I've been overwhelmed all day," said Urey. "It means a whole lot to me and I thank everybody for making it my day."

The idea of the parade was developed once it became obvious a traditional party wasn't possible due to concerns over the Coronavirus.

"There's so many of us. There are ten of us children and when the rule is you can only have ten in a room that kind of already put an end to the party," said Urey's daughter, Pattie.

So the family, including more than 40 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brought the party to her, while still keeping their social distance.

"You only turn 90 once," said Urey's Grand-daughter, Heather Snyder.

And they're not the only ones -celebrating traditional milestones in new ways.

In Struthers, dozens of signs have flooded the yards of high school seniors. The signs say "strong together and even apart."

"This is a great community. We've been out here for 21 years," said Michael Hawkins. "All three of my kids graduated from Struthers High School."

And in Austintown, the high school athletic director stood in a lit stadium with "2020"  spelled out on the bleachers behind him. He took to Facebook live at 8:20 pm and asked the community to hold their car horns for 20 seconds in honor of the graduating class.

At one home along Countryside, Drive cars gathered to blow their horns together.

"We just really want to say thank you to all these people who have been trying to help through all the chaos," said Senior Logan Franczowski.

A trying time, where without a doubt it's tough to adjust. But, as demonstrated across the Valley, there is no reason major milestones can't still be celebrated.
