Orthodox Easter is April 19 and for Russian and other Orthodox Christians it wouldn’t be the same Easter without the rich, slightly-sweet kulich bread standing tall in an Easter basket or on a breakfast table, surrounded by dyed Easter eggs.

The Easter treat, also known as paska, is baked in a paper mold that sets inside a tall, cylindrical tin — sometimes a coffee can is used. Many recipes call for ingredients like slivered almonds, candied fruit, like orange rind, or raisins to be incorporated into the dough. It is usually topped with white icing, that drizzles down the sides, and colorful nonpareils are sprinkled on top.

Sometimes the letters XB, for Christ Is Risen, is also formed on the top by using candied fruit.

It is traditional for the bread to be taken to church for a priestly blessing. Kulich is also eaten as a dessert.

Here is a sampling of bakeries and grocery stores that sell kulich in the San Fernando Valley. Call ahead to confirm availability.
