The NBA continues to consider almost every possibility when it comes to resuming its season. The only possibilities that seem to be out, according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, is the playoff structure we’re used to.
“At this point, several team and league officials told SI.com, any chance of a traditional postseason is out,” Mannix wrote. “Travel is expected to be challenging in the coming months. Cities are being impacted differently. What if restrictions in Memphis loosen before they do in Los Angeles? How would the NBA even hold these matchups?”
This basically confirms the single-site approach for any resumption of basketball. It appears increasingly likely that any form of NBA basketball we’ll see to complete the 2019-20 season will have to take place with multiple teams at one site as opposed to teams traveling from city to city, even if they play under more controlled circumstances. However, as Mannix and others have reported, it’s important to note that nothing is off the table at the moment.
The NBA has many hurdles to clear and they might not know what all those hurdles are until the entire country has more clarity of the coronavirus pandemic timeline. For basketball to resume, they’d need guarantees that everyone participating, as well as their playing and living areas, are virus-free. The NBA likely wants to avoid the optics of cutting in line for tests simply because they can afford private testing.
For now, the league is simply in the planning phase of this. They are anxious to avoid losing hundreds of millions of dollars by cancelling the season, so all solutions are being considered. The league converting its summer league plan in Las Vegas to a bigger regular season and playoffs plan might be the leader in the clubhouse right now, but as the pandemic evolves and more information comes forward, its possible new ideas could come with it.
