Citing student input, Evangel reschedules traditional commencement for August - News-Leader

Evangel University will still have a full-blown commencement in 2020; it will just be three months later than usual.

In a news release, President Carol Taylor said the private institution surveyed more than 500 spring graduates and 84 percent preferred the traditional ceremony.

“It was so moving and inspiring to read the comments of our 2020 graduates, as they finished their final semester remotely, missing their classmates and all of the last semester events and farewells,” said Taylor, in the release.

“While delayed, we are pleased to welcome our graduates back to campus with their families and friends to celebrate them in August."

This is expected to be the final commencement during Taylor's tenure, as she previously announced plans to retire later this year.

Missouri colleges and universities canceled in-person classes this spring to safeguard students and employees during the global pandemic of COVID-19.

The commencement for Evangel and the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary of Evangel will be at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 15 in the auditorium of Central Assembly, 1301 N. Boonville Ave. in Springfield.

The speaker will be Steve Grant, news anchor at KY3, Springfield's NBC affiliate. The Emmy Award winner graduated from Evangel in 1976. The ceremony will also be live-streamed.
